Texas Spring Landscaping Checklist

Spring_TexasSpring is a busy time for all things green, growing and gardening – especially here in Texas.  We know there’s always a lot to do – with Spring cleaning and gearing up for a long, hot summer – but your plants and landscape need to be prepared as well. Take some time to make sure you have done your duty to a beautiful, durable exterior this year! Here is our top to-do’s this Spring to ensure that your lawn, garden and landscape are in peak condition to take on the heat!

1. Do any plants need to be replaced? Do you have any evidence of insects or diseases? Take notes now – and during the summer and optimize your landscape and flower beds in the fall and winter. What works, keep and what takes over or seems to be prone to infection (like spider mites – UG!) plan to get rid of next season.  If you do have some mites or other insects – insecticidal soaps are helpful in their control.2. There are hot days ahead – preserve moisture in your landscape by using a quality mulch. They are great for looks, and help your plants retain moisture during the Texas heat.  Mulches are typically applied anywhere from 2-5 inches in depth – depending on the type and quality of mulch.3. Get a handle on the weeds. Pull them now – before they start getting worse. As the Summer months roll on – weeds and unwanted garden guests (or, pests) will only grow, multiply, seed and get worse. Keep up with this regularly to avoid an overgrown mess.

4. Get your tools ready for Spring!  You will need your tools for planting, pruning and keeping your landscape in check. Make sure your shears, shovels, and hoes are clean and sharpened.  Change the oil in your lawn mower, clean the air filter and make sure it’s clean – restring your edger, perform regular maintenance on all your machines and tools –  and make sure they are clean after use each time.
